Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. Yet so many people either skip it or eat foods high in sugar, with no nutritional value. Breakfast is my favourite meal. I could totally eat breakfast food for all 3 meals of my day. I’m one of those people who has always loved to eat first thing (I cannot function without it), and I always wake up hungry (no matter what I’ve had the day before). Going out for breakfast or brunch, or planning a big breakfast is one of my favourite things to do. However, we don’t always have time first thing in the morning to make pancakes, or have a cooked breakfast. So people tend to have cereal or grab those
‘healthy’ cereal bars and take them to work.
Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE cereal. I have a slight addiction to granola. It is embarrassingly my favourite aisle in the supermarket (HAHA). But so many of them hold no nutritional value and to say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we should be fuelling our bodies with something other than sugar. So with little time in the morning before we head to work, college or school, what can we eat? Here are my top 3 healthy, quick and easy breakfast ideas. I hope you like them!
1 – Greek yoghurt and your choice of toppings
This is my personal favourite, and the most versatile. I tend to go for Total Greek yoghurt, with a selection of fruit (usually a banana and some raspberries and blueberries), with a dash of honey and a small handful of muesli, granola or nuts. But the best thing is, there are so many options! If you want extra protein, you can add some protein powder into the yoghurt. You can also add chia seeds, flaxseed, nut butters… so many toppings! For me this is like a desert, yet it is so healthy, quick to make and most importantly, filling! You don’t want to eat and then feel hungry an hour later!
2 – Oats or Zoats
Porridge is so simple, yet so tasty! I like to use 40g oats, with almond milk and voila… simple! You can even add your choice of protein powder (I’m currently loving chocolate flavoured oats… I mean who wouldn’t want chocolatey goodness in the morning?!) Just like with Greek yoghurt, I love to add fruit, nut butters, honey, chia seeds… anything you like! This only takes a few minutes in the morning to make, and is a much better option than sugary cereal!
Now onto zoats. You may already know what this is, or you may have no idea! Trust me, when I first found out what it was, I did think it was a little strange! So zoats is basically oats with grated courgette/zucchini. Strange, right? But then again, why not? It adds a portion of your fruit and veg into your diet, it bulks out your porridge making your portion HUGE and you can’t even taste it! Just place either half or a full grated courgette into your mix and microwave for 2-3 mins or until cooked, mix in your protein powder and there you go… protein zoats! Try it before you knock it!
3 – Protein Shake
Probably the quickest and most convenient of the 3 as you can take it to work if you’re in a rush, or, if like me you go to the gym in the morning before work, I like to have this after as it is delicious and filling! You can use any flavour protein powder to your liking. My personal favourite is the Protein Banana Shake, which I have previously posted about here.
All you need to do is place all ingredients into a blender, whizz it up and you are ready to go! There are hundreds of recipes out there to choose from, so take your pick!
